Black Movies for Black History Month

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Transferring my Twitter thread of black movies to here:

One Night in Miami... (2021) dir. Regina King (Prime Video)

It's an adaption of Kemp Powers' play that imagines what went down the real night Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown spent celebrating Ali's win over Sonny Liston.

The Vernon Johns Story (1994) dir. Kenneth Fink (Prime Video)

One of my fav black historical films mostly because James Earl Jones' portrayal of Vernon Johns reminds me of my dad. Vernon Johns is considered the father of the civil rights movement and pastored at Dexter before MLK.

Eve's Bayou (1997) dir. Kasi Lemmons (Hulu)

"The summer I killed my father, I was 10 years old." This movie is haunting. The main character's, Eve (Jurnee Smollett) perception of her father changes when she becomes a witness to his infidelity and predatory behavior.

Sylvie's Love (2020) dir. Eugene Ashe (Prime Video)

This movie was gorgeous above anything else. The music had me dancing around my living room. An enthralling period black romance!

The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) dir. Joe Talbot (Prime Video)

This might be one of my favorite movies ever. It's a visually-pleasing tale about two men reckoning with gentrification, and finding the importance in community.

The Wiz (1978) dir. Sidney Lumet (Showtime)

Y'already know what this is! But did this movie scare anyone else as a kid?

A Soldier's Story (1984) dir. Norman Jewison (Pluto TV)

This is one of Denzel's first movies and a riveting murder mystery that examines the deeper layers of racism.

Moonlight (2016) dir. Barry Jenkins (Netflix)

An iconic! game-changing! legendary! passionate! black coming-of age film! If you haven't seen it yet, you need to today.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997) dir. Robert Iscove (Disney Plus)

Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as the fairy godmother will always be so special.

Judas and the Black Messiah (2021) dir. Shaka King (Max)

I'm still trying to find the words for this one, but you should watch it as soon as you can.

George Washington (2000) dir. David Gordon Green (Criterion Channel)

This is an incredible film about a group of children in the rural South whose lives get interrupted by a tragedy. I really loved the nuance and care that was given to these young black characters.

The Five Heartbeats (1991) dir. Robert Townsend

We need to give Robert Townsend his flowers. This movie is a black classic and one of my favorites ever. That talent show scene will never get old.

Love & Basketball (2000) dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood

This movie is full of iconic of black talent and definitely a black love classic!

Malcolm X (1992) dir. Spike Lee

I have too many words for this one. I could watch it over and over again. This is one of Denzel's best movies and, most certainly, Spike Lee's magnum opus.

Ruby Bridges (1998) dir. Euzhan Palcy (Disney Plus)

This gets a spot because my elementary school played it every year, and it was directed by a black woman. It's a powerful story with a meaningful message, but those white protestors deserve no absolution.

The Color Purple (1985) dir. Steven Spielberg (Max)

This is one of my favorite movies and it introduced me to Alice Walker's work and ignited my passion for film when I was younger.
